What is the difference between a military humvee and a hummer?

Greg...if your HMMWV doesn't have power steering take it to the motor pool. They should all be R1 or A2 series by now.

The military models of the humvee differ greatly from the civilian sector. JP-8 is just a dryer diesel fuel.

if you look at the chassis on the HMMWV there are no frame to body or body to body welds. this is to make it more practical to change a component in adverse conditions. Also a major difference can be noticed when looking at the brakes on a Humvee and hummer. The Humvee has disk brakes connected directly to the differentials instead of hub to give it more "true" ground clearance.

You will not find a humvee with a 5.7 liter engine in the military. it will be either be a 6.2L, 6.5 detuned, 6.5 N/A, or a 6.5 T.

When the HMMWV was prototyped to be a civilian vehicle, it was a lot closer to todays then the ones the make now. they share very few features one being the general shape.

Also, it it not the differentials that give the HMMWV such a lower gear ratio. The diffs are geared as standard as they come. It is the hubs that make the difference. On an A2 series it is; 2.72:1=low and 1.01=high at the transfer case, the transmission is 1st- 2.48:1, 2nd- 1.48:1, 3rd- 1.0:1, 4th- .075:1, Reverse- 2.08:1, Torque Converter ratio- 2.1:1, 2.73:1=diffs, and the geared hubs are 1.92:1|||Amour plating and about 50 000 bucks

1 is street able the other is not|||Well, to start out, I am a Marine and have been for 5 years...... the military Humvees are not made for the everyday, luguray use as the hummer, our humvees have had seats, ruff ridding supention, no radio, no power stering, or anything special that most of us are use to having. But the Hummer has it all, leather seats, power everything, cd/mp3 player it has everything that you would need.....|||There are a few differances between a military issue Highly mobile multi-wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) and the civilian version called the hummer. Most notibly is the type of gas the engine uses. The military version uses something called JP-8 which is the military's version of an all purpose desiel fuel. Then there is the armor platting and vechile mountings for equipment like radios, turret mounted weapons, There are also sevral versons of the military HMMWV, Ranging from the M1114 to the M1025

Some have things like AC others don't as well as other mission specific essentals that the civilian verson does not need. Personally I don't see why anyone would want a hummer. Can you say Gas gussler|||The Civilian hummer has no armor. The Civilian Hummer is geared for highway speed. The Army Humvee has a lower rear gear ratio so that it is powerful, but slower.

Eg.) Hummer has gear ratio of 3.73:1, where the Humvee might have a ratio of 20:1 or something.

It has the same size of engine but with the low gear ratio and weight it could pull 4 civilian hummers (with the parking brake applied) around the block serveral times.|||besides the armor plating and the gas mileage and the top speed and the weight, the military humvee has guns mounted on it|||The Army Humvee has armor under the car and all around it. The army version is made out of very thick metal and gets 1-2miles per gallonn with gas. It is very heavy and the top speed is only 85mph.|||Ditto What Greg Said...SEMPER FIDELIS!!!... Military Hummers Are Cold, Loud And you inhale exhaust the whole time if the rear is not secured. Think of if you took a civilian hummer stripped it of all interior and sound deadening. took away 100 HP and rear view mirror. and replaced your seat with a phonebook wrapped in terry cloth and there you have it. Another little know fact is that all hummers fuel is switched from JP-8 to JP-5 when they are transported on ship because the flash point of JP-5 is min. 60 掳C and is more suitable for naval conditions.|||The original HUMVEE is more rugged, has a higher chassis, and I believe is no longer available to the public(could be wrong though), as in you can only purchase them second hand. The HUMMER is basically the civilian model, the entire thing isn't as rugged, has a lower chassis. I am not familiar with the H2. The H3 is built off the Blazer chassis.|||don't really know but. i suspect the luxuries. of driving everyday. cd player interior. paint/
